Question re: electives in US

Postby nuttybux » Sat Apr 08, 2006 3:44 pm

Hello there,
I'm a newbie and this is my 1st post...so please be gentle. :)
I will be a MS-1 this year in a med school in Ireland. I'm originally from the states and have moved to Ireland with my family.

My questions are :-
When should IMG be doing the electives/externship in the states to increase the chance of getting residency match in the future ?

How many elective(s) do we have to do & how long does the elective last ?

Can we start the elective on the very 1st yr in Med school?...I know we can't really asst. the doc at this point due to limited knowledge/experience...but if am able to find a doc that's willing to accept student...will his/her LOR at this point helps?

Any input, opinion is greatly appreciated!
Thanks.

Typically electives are done during the 3rd and 4th year at medical school. Each elective is usually 4 weeks long.
