what is the difference between Preliminary and Categorical

Postby marypb » Thu Sep 23, 2010 10:55 am

I am an IMG, my USMLE step1 81(first attempt), Step2Ck 88(second attempt), CS passed (third attempt). I graduated in 1991, practicing Medicine for 5 years in China. Last year, I had a 26-week "hand-on" experience in the U.S., and got 3 LOC from american physicians. I have not worked in the medical field over 10 years. Now I am applying IM programs.
What is the difference between Preliminary and Categorical?
May I be easier to get interviews If I choose Preliminary than Categorical?
Can I choose Preliminary and Categorical at the same program?

Thanks for the help.

Most likely you need categorical. Preliminary positions are 1-year long and needed for applicants that go into advanced specialty that requires preliminary year, like Anesthesiology, Radiology, etc.

Choosing both at the same program delivers a mixed message. Prelim indicates that you want to go into advanced specialty, so this almost automatically make your application look not well qualified for categorical.
