Korean Dr. Internal Medicine, Infection--Chances?

Postby JDD » Tue Jul 19, 2011 11:33 pm

Hello, this is for my wife. Her specialty is infection. She graduated medical school in 2002 and has finished a four-year residency, her Master's degree, and one year fellowship here in Korea. What are her chances for finding a residency in the US? Also, has taken all tests except Step 3. We are open to most any location. Any tips or advice?

Thank you in advance! :D

There will be lots of factors... Has she taken the USMLEs? What are her scores?

She has taken everything but the Step 3. Her scores are not great (under 200 as far as I know). Also, she finished Med School in Korea back in 2006. She has contributed to 7 papers which have been published, including 4 case reports as the first author. At the moment we are not optimistic, and are considering observerships in the states so she can get some US clinical experience. However I suggested that we widen our net and apply to as many programs as possible...

All I can say is to apply to as many programs as possible. Do not focus on IM only. Add FM to the list.

I think her background experience as a internal medicine doctor in Korea may help, but I was told most important factor to screen applicant for interview is step 1 score. (and must have good communication skills including being able to speak English without accent and communicate without difficulty)

2011 AAMC published charting outcome said candidates who matched for IM was 226 for step 1, 237 for step 2.

I think she should try FM as well in addition to IM.
